Henderson says that Monty was out of practice with riding & looked nervous when aboard Rommel. On the other hand Henderson says that the white stallion behaved beautifully when he rode the horse. The wave of Cossack cavalry charging forward on horseback while waving swords made for great propaganda footage, but would not have been seen in combat. The Soviet cavalry basically used horses as trucks that didn't need petrol or spare parts. They would ride to the combat area and dismount to conduct standard infantry operations, using rifles and machine guns. Attacking on horseback with a sword was both silly and suicidal.
